Do I need to register my marriage?
A Portuguese who get married abroad with foreigners or other Portuguese citizens hasto transcribe the marriage in Portugal to produce effects in the Portuguese legal system.
The transcription of marriage may be a necessary document for others procedures, for example, applications for nationality or divorce’s process.
The transcription must be done at a Civil Registry Office or at a Portuguese consulateabroad. The process is much faster at the notaries in Portugal where It takes around 2 or3 months and the person does not have to stay in person, as can be represented byattorney.
The necessary documents: the marriage certificate issued by the authorities of thecountry where the marriage took place, full narrative birth certificate less than 6 monthsold of the foreign partner, copy passport and ID. In general, all documents issued abroadmust be translated and legalized
Notary fees:The transcription process has an associated cost of €120.00, to which willbe added €30.00 in the event of a prenuptial agreement
